Cellzome is building a pipeline of proprietary small molecule therapeutics targeting inflammatory diseases.
Inflammation occurs in a diverse range of diseases, but all share a common feature - a dysregulated, overactive immune response affecting a wide variety of organs, ranging from the respiratory system (asthma or allergic rhinitis), to the destruction of joints (rheumatoid arthritis) or failure of vital organs (systemic lupus erythematosus). The overall size of the market for inflammatory diseases excluding respiratory disease is anticipated to grow to about $25.6bn by 2016 due to an increase in the prevalence of these diseases in ageing populations. A large fraction of patients either do not respond at all to current therapies or make an inadequate response. Many therapies are delivered parentally. Thus, there is a significant opportunity for new therapeutics which can be delivered orally.
